Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1984, Western Oregon University art professor Jim Mattingly, painted a mural on the east facing rear wall of the historic Elsinore Theatre in downtown Salem. His piece titled, "Theatrical Heartscape," included "...universal figures from vaudeville, early theater and film." These figures included W.C. Fields, Marlene Dietrich, and Charlie Chaplin.

The coloration of the mural slowly faded for the next 19 years until in 2012 a group formed to spearhead a restoration project for the local landmark. The "Friends of Mattingly's Mural" (FOMM) received full support from the Historic Elsinore Theatre as well as Salem's Historic Planner. They begain the restoration process during the summer of 2013. Artist Dan Cohen conducted the restoration work on the mural. The mural was featured in the fall issue of Preservation, the national publication of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
