Summary
The Gustav F. Raaum digital photograph collection consists of images of ski jumping, the FIS, and Big Sky, Montana. Included are early images of Raaum and peers ski jumping in Norway and the United States. The later portion of the collection consists of images from Raaum's involvement in the F.I.S., various Winter Olympic Games, and Big Sky Montana Ski Resort. The collection consists solely of scans taken from scrapbooks which were loaned by Gustav Raaum. All the images have been kept in their original order which is roughly chronological.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

Gustav F. Raaum was born January 20, 1926 in Brevik, Norway. In 1947, at the age of 21, Raaum came to the United States as a member of the Norwegian Ski Jumping Team. Raaum attended the University of Washington where he received his BA degree in Business Administration in 1950. Raaum married Claire Thompson of Tacoma and together they have three children, David, Christian and LouAnn.

Raaum is a Certified Public Accountant and has worked as President of Jackson Hole Ski Resort and President, CEO and Chairman of Big Sky Montana Resort. In addition to leading a successful professional career, Raaum has been very involved in local community clubs and associations.

As an avid ski jumper, Raaum held many titles. In 1946, he placed first in the Junior Class in Holmenkollen, Norway considered the World Series of Ski Jumping; 1948, California-Nevada Class A, and, Pacific Northwest Class A Ski Jumping Champion; 1950, NCAA National Ski Jumping Champion; and in 1950, was named All-American at University of Washington.

Raaum was very involved in the Winter Olympic Games, International Ski Federation (FIS) and the United States Ski Association (USSA). Raaum was active as Treasurer, Director and Committee Chairman of the Seattle Ski Club, PSNA, and USSA, he was in USSEF, the U.S. Olympic Committee and FIS for over 30 years. Raaum officiated in most World Championships, Winter Olympic Games, and many National and Pacific Northwest meets between 1958 and 1983. Raaum was elected to the United States National Ski Hall of Fame in 1980.

The majority of the Gustav Raaum digital photograph collection focuses on ski jumping, the FIS and Big Sky, Montana. Included are early images of Raaum and peers ski jumping in Norway and the United States. The later portion of the collection consists of images from Raaum's involvement in the F.I.S., various Winter Olympic Games, and Big Sky Montana Ski Resort.

The collection consists solely of scans taken from scrapbooks which were loaned by Gustav Raaum. All the images have been kept in their original order which is roughly chronological.
