Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Rollin Sanford (October 18, 1875-December 7, 1944) was born in New York City. His parents were Elihu Harrison Sanford and Mary W. Baxter. He arrived in Seattle in early 1897, living there briefly before leaving for the Klondike in the winter of 1897. Sanford embarked for the Klondike on the sailing vessel Lucille, stopping at Nanaimo to load mules and docking at Skagway and then proceeding over the Chilkoot Trail. Sanford returned to Seattle in the fall of 1898. Between February 1 and April 1899, Sanford traveled to the Far East by steamer from San Francisco. On November 25, 1899, Rollin married Olive Eliza Baxter (1876-December 23, 1932) and they returned to Alaska for their honeymoon, probably to Skagway. They lived there for about a year while Rollin was employed as a paymaster for the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. They had one child, Rollin Harrison "Stork" Sanford (1903-1999) who coached rowing at Cornell for 33 seasons, winning four national championships in the 1950s.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of images of essentially three different periods of Rollin Sanford's life: Seattle (1897, post 1900); Klondike Gold Rush and Skagway (1897-1898, circa 1900); and a trip to the Far East from San Francisco by steamer from February to April 1899.

Sanford's series of photographs taken in Seattle reflect the short period when he lived there before leaving for the Klondike in the winter of 1897, including images of Seattle, family scenes and sailing aboard the sloop Kelpie. Photographs from his time in the Klondike include images of Dyea, Sheep Camp, Chilkoot Summit, digging bodies out of snow slide (probably the one in March 1898), Lake Bennett, boat building and whip sawing and running the Yukon's rapids. Photographs taken after Sanford's return to Seattle document Magnolia Bluff, and Seattle in the fall of 1898 including land clearing, and the construction of the officers' quarters at Fort Lawton. About 100 photographs from Sanford's 1899 steamer trip to the Far East document fire drills aboard ship and views of Honolulu, Manila, and Nagasaki. The collection also includes baby pictures of Sanford's son Rollin Harrison (later known by the nickname "Stork") which date to 1903. Other early 1900's images include landscapes at Woodinville, the San Juan Islands, and a recreational boating trip through British Columbia including Knight's Inlet, the Hudson's Bay Co. fort at Nanaimo and Ballenas Islands.
