Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Montana Hotel opened on July 1, 1889. It was situated at 200 Main St. SW, on the corner of Park Ave, in Anaconda, Montana. Richmond Miller was the first proprietor, and G. W. Reynolds became the manager after 1893. J. S. Marshall managed the hotel in the early 1900s. When first opened it was advertised as “the handsomest and most elegantly appointed hotel in the state, built in European style with strictly first class cuisine and service.” The hotel boasted of being “thoroughly fire proof, and having running water, baths, steam heat, elevators, electric bells, fire alarms, open fire places, and all modern conveniences.” (R.L. Polk & Co.'s Butte City Directory, 1902, p.125) In 1902 rooms started at $3.50 a day. W. C. Davis managed the hotel in the 1950s. In 1962 it was renamed the Hotel Marcus Daly. The hotel was closed in 1976.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection consists of the Montana Hotel Registry from Aug. 6, 1895 to October 31, 1895, on one roll of microfilm. Hotel patrons signed the Registry upon arrival. The Registry includes columns for patrons to sign their name, their residence (home address), time checked in, room number, and any remarks they had about the Hotel. This last column was often left blank. The desk clerk checked off the patron’s names when they checked out. Many of the visitors were from Butte, Montana. The top of the Registry carries the warnings: “Guests without baggage are required to pay in advance,” and “All moneys, jewels, coats, valises, and other valuables must be left at the office or the Manager will not be responsible for any loss.” The Registry also carries advertisements for the Tuttle Manufacturing and Supply Company
