Biographical NoteReturn to Top
When Leo Schwabacher was 21, the call went out from Schwabacher headquarters for a family member to come to Seattle and work for Schwabacher Bros. Leo volunteered and it would become his life's work. After marrying Edna Blum in 1902 in San Francisco, they lived at 15th Avenue and East Pike Street in Seattle, now the site of Temple De Hirsch Sinai, later buying a house at Three Tree Point, south of town. Leo served as vice president of the Gatzert-Schwabacher Land Company, and was a trustee of Schwabacher Bros. & Company. They had two children, Morton and Bertha. Leo died in 1930 while Edna died in 1981.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Meta Kaplan and K. Winn on 19 Jul 1973; transcript. Covers period 1860-1950.
This interview with Edna Schwabacher, widow of Leo, and her son Morton, features recollections about the family's history and development of the wholesale firm, the first in Puget Sound. Mrs. Schwabacher also describes her activities in the Council of Jewish Women, and both interviewees describe their attitudes toward Zionism.

Scope and Content: Contains clippings about Morton Schwabacher, an issue of the Sigma Seer (1931), the newsletter of the Jewish sorority Sigma Theta Pi, and family correspondence. The correspondence includes a collection of postcards from around the world sent to Edna Schwabacher (1896-1902) as well as letters, mostly from Edith to her daughter Bertha (1927-1970). The correspondence, while just touching on historical events, primarily describe Edna's personal and social life in Seattle. Also includes self-published book by Joseph K. Heyman titled "My Children's 'Roots' and 'Kinfolks,'" (June 1981) about the Schwabacher and Heyman families.
