Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Toshihide Nakayama is a professor for the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1997. His research interests include Wakashan languages (North American Pacific Northwest Coast); morphosyntax; linguistic typology. Nakayama’s dissertation focused on discourse-pragmatic dynamism in Nuu-cha-nulth (Nootka) morphosyntax.
Please note that the name "Nootka" is considered offensive and a misnomer by some Nuuchahnulth people today, though others continue to use it to refer to themselves. "Nuuchahnulth" is the correct tribal name, but we have included the name "Nootka" in our finding aid to refer to the researcher’s specific usage of the term embedded into his deposited materials.

The Nuu-chah-nulth are from the western side of Vancouver Island, comprised of 14 communities with language, family, and cultural affinities, including a traditional practice of whaling. (Source: “Nuu-chah-nulth”, American Museum of Natural History; Accessed: 04/10/23)
Ahousaht is one of 14 Nuu-chah-nulth Nations. Ahousaht means "our backs against the mountains" Ahousaht is of Nuu chah Nulth speaking language. There are over 2,100 registered Ahousaht members that live up and down Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, across Canada and in various countries. Consultants include Dr. George Louie (Ahousaht Nootka elder), Mr. Archie Thompson, Mrs. Josephine Thompson, Mr. Harold Little, and Mrs. Carolina Little, all of whom are bilingual in English and the Ahousaht dialect of Nuu-chah-nulth. The data collected through tape recordings and field notes include vocabularies, sentences, conversation, a number of traditional narratives, and texts containing ethnographic information.
