Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Mabel Humphry was born in Iowa on June 3, 1892 to Claude and Jennie Humphry. She was the oldest of three children, older sister to two brothers, Ernest and Walter. In 1900 her father was employed as a barber in Missouri Valley, Iowa, but by 1910 the family had moved to Missoula, Montana where her father had taken a position as an undertaker. The 1911 Polk City Directory for Missoula states that Jennie and Mabel were living together in a house on South 10th Street, but Claude, Ernest and Walter are not listed as residents at that address. In 1913, Claude, Ernest, and Mabel appear in the Polk City Directory for Missoula at the same address, Claude working as an undertaker, Ernest as a clerk at McGuffy Hardware Company, and Mabel as a bookkeeper for the Missoula Laundry Company. Jennie and Walter are absent from the city directory in this year. Mabel continued to work as a bookkeeper or accountant until 1938. She later moved to Washington state and then San Diego, CA where she died on December 22, 1977. She is buried in Pocatello, ID with her brother Ernest.
