Historical NoteReturn to Top

In January 1891, the International Typographical Union issued a charter to fourteen men permitting an organization to be known as the Missoula Typographical Union, No. 277. Those fourteen men were A.J. Chapman (first President), C.F. Sheers, Robert Pelkey, H.M. Peirce, Lubeiki, George W. Turk, H.B. Merritt, Frank M. Keim, G.C. Hendricks, R.L. Thompson, E.A. Milligan, B.T. Nesmith, H. Mattison, and C.A. Myers. The Missoula Typographical Union, No. 277 held its first meeting on December 8, 1890. A committee comprised of members was appointed by temporary union leaders to draft by-laws and a constitution and were adopted in whole by union members at the following meeting held January 18, 1891. A.J. Chapman was elected the first president of the union. The Missoula Typographical Union represented print and professional media staff at a variety of outlets including Artcraft Printers (Missoula), local newspapers, and the University of Montana.

The International Typographical Union (ITU) dissolved in 1986 and most members were absorbed by the Teamsters or the Communication Workers of America (CWA). According to meeting minutes, the Missoula Typographical Union, No. 277 recognizes merging with the CWA in its regular meeting on January 5, 1987. The last documented organized meeting of the Missoula Typographical Union, No. 277, is from January, 1991.
