Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Magnolia Historical Society is a community organization dedicated to documenting and teaching the history of the Magnolia district in the city of Seattle. Its members researched and published a history of the area, Magnolia: Memories and Milestones, in 2000. A follow-up volume, Magnolia: Making More Memories, was released in 2007. The Society incorporated in 2001.

In addition to researching Magnolia history for its book publications, the society produces teaching units, articles, texts, multimedia presentations, and archives. The Magnolia Historical Society publishes its own newsletter as well as contributing a regular column to the local newspaper, the Magnolia News. The organization also works on local historical issues, such as the preservation of the Historic Fort Lawton District and signage at the West Point Lighthouse.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists largely of images of Magnolia events taken by Ken Baxter between 1963 and 1971, the majority of which were submitted to the local newspaper, the Magnolia News . These include images of Magnolia residents at local events, Magnolia buildings and other Magnolia locations such as West Point Beach and Fort Lawton. In addition to sports and recreational events, holiday activities, and civic, business, and religious events, Baxter photographed local businesspeople, automobile accidents in Magnolia and earthquake damage to local businesses. Baxter also photographed the annual "Aloha Days" parade, the Magnolia children's parade which took place every summer during the Seattle SEAFAIR festival.

A smaller number of images depict Washington State businesses outside of Magnolia, such as the Ed Chabot cranberry farm in Long Beach and the Rogers Candy Company (in Seattle?)

The rest of the collection includes historic and recent images of the Magnolia neighborhood collected during research for the Society's publications, Magnolia: Memories & Milestones and Magnolia: Making More Memories. Most of the modern images were taken by Monica Wooton, and include individuals, group events, local buildings, landmarks, and scenic landscapes. Several Magnolia area landmarks are depicted, including the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, West Point Lighthouse, Children's Convalescent Home, and the U.S. Army base at Fort Lawton, now part of Discovery Park.
