Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Owen Gump's study of photography began in 2000, when he enrolled in an architectural photography course at the University of Washington. Adopting the documentary approach, which emphasizes description of the subject rather than a photographer's commentary, Gump researched and photographed the Duwamish industrial area of Seattle. The end result satisfied the senior capstone project requirement of the Community and Environmental Planning Program (Department of Urban Design and Planning), for the B.A. degree in Design and Planning Studies at the University of Washington.
For his work on "Built Landscapes of the North Duwamish," Gump received recognition as a Mary Gates Scholar and was given a Mary Gates Endowment for Student Leadership grant. His photographs for this project were displayed in shows at the Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the University of Washington College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the University of Oregon Portland Center.
Following his work at the University of Washington, Owen Gump received a Fulbright grant to complete a similar project at a German university.

Part of the historic south downtown area that also includes Pioneer Square and the International District, the industrial landscape of the North Duwamish neighborhood reflects its position as the largest industrial and commercial area in the Pacific Northwest. This area of Seattle provides 25% of the city's tax base and over 70,000 jobs.

The collection contains 20 black-and-white photographic prints by Owen Gump documenting industrial structures and landscapes in the south downtown/north Duwamish area of Seattle as they appeared in 2000-2002. The photographs were used in his "Built Landscapes of the North Duwamish," a photographic documentation of the area. Also included are Gump's senior capstone project report and a copy of Arcade magazine containing a photo-essay by Gump.
