Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Donald McKernan (1918-1979) graduated with a B.S. and then a Ph.D. from the School of Fisheries at the University of Washington. He began his first job as a marine biologist with the Washington State Department of Fisheries (1941-1945) followed by a position as director of research with the Oregon Fish Commission (1945-1952). McKernan then worked as assistant director of the Pacific Oceanic Fishery in Hawaii (1952-1955) followed by a job with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska (1955-1957).

McKernan was director of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (now known as the National Marine Fisheries Service) from 1957 until 1966. McKernan began working as the head of the Department of State’s office of ocean affairs in Washington D.C. (1966-1974). He participated, during that time, in several Law of the Sea conferences. From 1974 until the time of his death in China in May of 1979, he was director of the Institute for Marine Studies and Professor of Marine Affairs and Fisheries at the University of Washington.
