Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Tape-recorded interview conducted by Karyl Winn, with transcript.

Born in 1902 in Marmara, Mr. Policar was a child when his father Marco came to Seattle in 1909 to improve his circumstances. His father, a baker, returned after 2 years of working in bakery and a sawmill. After the World War the Sephardic population of the island largely moved to Istanbul. Harry Policar immigrated to Seattle in 1920 and continued his career in the bakery business. He also mentions the families who established Ahavath Ahim synagogue and reasons for its subsequent merger with Bikur Holim.
