Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Helen Bornstein Rucker was born in Seattle, January 8, 1903, the daughter of daughter of Maurice and Julia Bornstein. She was educated in Seattle and graduated from National Park College in Washington D.C. She married B. Wallace Rucker. Helen Rucker was the author of two historical novels about early Seattle, "Cargo of Brides" and "The Wolf Tree," as well as numerous short stories. She was a life-long member of Temple de Hirsch Sinai, of which her family were founding members. Rucker was the Unit Chairman of the American Red Cross, 1940-1945 and a member of Seattle Junior Programs 1941-1956. She was on the Board of Trustees of the Cornish School of Allied Arts from 1935-1938 and the Friends of the Seattle Public Library 1957-1960. She was also a member of the National League of Freelance Writers and the Soroptimist Club. She died December 28, 2002. (Bio info from Seattle Post-Intelligencer obituary.)

Letters, notes regarding her research on Seattle Jewish history, hand-drawn map of the Seattle Jewish neighborhood of Helen Rucker's childhood, ephemera, clippings, Some material relates to relatives of Helen Rucker, manuscript and newsclipping of Rucker's short stories "Slightly Used" and "The Story of Adrienne Blake", as well as correspondence with publisher Little, Brown and Co. concerning publication of her novels "The Cargo of Brides" and "the Wolf Tree." The materials also include a 1908 deed for purchased seats at Temple de Hirsch by Helen's father Maurice Bornstein, her grandfather's teaching contract (1849) in Germany and some other family correspondence and papers.
