Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Tatsuya Arai (1864-1922) was a Japanese immigrant who became a prominent Seattle-area businessman, banker, and Japanese community leader. He led Japanese involvement during the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, building "Streets of Tokio" with two other businessmen. His son, Clarence Arai (1901-1963) was a lawyer and activist with the Japanese American Citizens League, along with his wife, Yone (1906-2004).

. Other members of the Arai family include Tatusya's wife Kan Asaoka Arai (1880-1956), and the rest of their children: Thomas (1902-1966), Catherine (1904-1919), Arthur (1907-1929), Lillian (1912-2010), and Kathleen (b. 1922?).

Thomas Ogawa (1907-1991) was a Canadian-Japanese merchant, and husband to Lillian Arai. He was briefly an FBI informant concerning Japanese business interests in America. The Arai and Ogawa families were interned in the Minidoka Japanese Internment Camp.
