Phil Metschan, Sr. (1840-1920) was born in Hesse-Cassel, Germany and came to the United States in 1855. He worked in a butcher shop in Cincinnati, traveled to California in 1861, and to British Columbia and Oregon in 1862. In 1863 he joined the gold rush to eastern Oregon, settling in Canyon City, where he ran a store and later became a county official. He was elected state treasurer in 1890, serving until 1898. In 1889 he established the Imperial Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

The collection contains correspondence, diaries, financial and legal records, pioneer family files, photographs and memorabilia.

Phil Metschan, Sr. materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence (1878-1916), diaries, calendars, financial documents, and a 1894 diary of Anna Metschan.

Phil Metschan, Jr. materials include incoming and outgoing correspondence (1887-1946).

Other material consists of manuscripts about the Metschan family and Oregon history, financial and legal documents, newspapers, clippings and other publications, files on pioneer families of Oregon, photographs of the Metschan family, Joaquin Miller, and Major Rinehart, and memorabilia such as service awards, political mementoes and passports.
