People who lived in Policia (in the Ukraine near Berditchev) were called Polishuk. His father was a Cantor. His mother ran a printing business. They sometimes printed anti-Czarist literature, for the Intelligentsia. He describes the town and Jewish life there. The Polishuks were well to do. He describes his schools and education, the anti-Semitism, and pogroms. He tells of his parents' betrothal. He tells how his mother got her children through Manchuria, and the murder of his father. He tells of a "Fixer" who helped his brother avoid military service by spraying his throat. The family wanted to go back, since they liked their life and position in the homeland. He tells how life changed after the Russian Revolution and how they brought money to America and how the government paid interest on the first 50,000 roubles. He tells how they founded business in Seattle and his first real estate purchases. He tells of his civic work and work in Israel. One recently resettled Russian family is named Polishuk. He is waiting to see if it is a relative. He tells of his sons; one is an opera singer, the other a graduate of the Harvard Law School.
