Historical NoteReturn to Top

Wayne Russell McConkie was born in Moab, Utah, on 10 September 1909. He spent his early years herding sheep, but later became a teacher in the Moab High School, saying "I'd rather herd sheep than kids; you can throw rocks at sheep." He taught industrial arts, general science, and geology. All through his life he displayed a great interest in and love of the canyon country of southern Utah, and took many trips into the back country, by foot, horseback, and canoe, to take photos and films. In 1942, he met Norman Nevills, well-known river outfitter, and worked for Nevills on many subsequent river trips on the Colorado and San Juan Rivers. In 1947, McConkie moved to St. George, Utah, where he also taught geology in the local high school, and continued his exploration of the canyon country. He died in St. George on 1 September 1996.

Arrangement

The slides were arranged into a series of slide shows, obviously given by McConkie to his students or other groups. There is some duplication among the slides, and in some cases the reason for the arrangement is unclear. Original image order was retained when slides were scanned.
