Historical NoteReturn to Top

Washington State Normal School, Central Washington University's predecessor, completed Kamola Hall in October of 1911. A dining room was added in 1915 and enlarged in 1919. The facility was originally used as a women’s dormitory. During the Second World War, Army Air Corps cadets used the dorms as barracks while training at the college and nearby airfield. During the 1990s, Kamola Hall served as a dorm for international students from Asia. The building was completely remodeled in 2002 and 2003 and is currently a co-ed dormitory for honor students.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Included in the Kamola Hall scrapbook are approximately 300 Polaroid photographs, both in black-and-white and color. Most of these photos date from 1965 to 1967. Along with original photographs, this collection includes preservation photocopies of original artwork which decorated the pages of the scrapbook, as well as newspaper clippings, flyers, programs and newsletters documenting events which took place on Central's campus and in Kamola Hall from 1965 to 1967.

The box list for this collection documents the contents of each scrapbook as it was found. Most of the photographs, etc., stayed secure to the mounts or picture corners of the book, but many were found loose. The processor numbered the photos on the page running from top to bottom and left to right. In some instances captions appeared without a corresponding photo--these captions are noted in the box list, as well as instances where a loose photo was positively matched to a caption. The box list also notes the original location of each item. Descriptions in quotes come directly from the scrapbook creator, while descriptions in brackets are those contributed by the processor for identification purposes. Three photos from the early 1990s were found loose at the front of the scrapbook. With the provenance to these photos unknown, the processor removed them for future placement within contemporary scrapbook / image collections.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
