Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Harry Dolan Boivin served for 26 years in the Oregon Legislative Assembly. His eight year service in the House of Representatives included holding the position of Speaker of the House and his 18 year service in the Senate, included holding the position of Senate President. He was well known by the nickname "the Fox" because of his skill in parliamentary procedures.

As a citizen legislator from Klamath Falls, Oregon he was a leader in education activities in the state, serving on the State Board of Education and part of the movement to create the community college system in Oregon. Harry Boivin is especially remembered for his championship of Oregon Institute of Technology, helping to establish the institution in 1947 and supporting it throughout his legislative career. He was a generous benefactor of the institution.

Harry Boivin was born in Ashland, Oregon on February 7, 1904, spent most of his life in Klamath Falls and died on March 15, 1999. His family included his wife, Ruth, son, Robert, and daughter, Kathleen, and stepson, Joseph.

The collection is composed of two series: Series I: Oregon Legislative Assembly Activity Scrapbooks covering the period 1935-1969 (6.5 linear feet, 13 boxes) and Series II: Personal Papers covering the period 1911-1990 (1 linear foot, 2 boxes). The Oregon Legislature Activity Scrapbooks document both Harry Boivin’s legislative actions and general activities of the Oregon House and Senate during those years. The Personal papers series includes correspondence, photographs, an oral history interview manuscript, 90th birthday celebration memorabilia and various publications.
