Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) commenced in 1933 as a federal jobs program to document old buildings. It became a permanent program in 1934, administered by the National Parks Service. A parallel program, the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), came into being in 1969, to document engineering and industrial sites. The HABS and HAER reports in this collection were gathered by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, and deposited at the Oregon Historical Society, the University of Oregon, and the Library of Congress, beginning prior to 1990. Related reports, including mitigation reports prior to demolition or replacement of structures, are also filed with this collection.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of written historical descriptions, reports, photographic images, and reproductions of architectural and engineering drawings relating to historic buildings and engineering and industrial sites, mostly within the state of Oregon, with a few from neighboring states or states with related sites. Most of the images are black and white photo prints and negatives, although there are also color prints, slides, negatives, and digital images on photo compact disks. James B. Norman photographed many of these sites. Surveyed sites include residential and commercial buildings, dams, and bridges, including bridges spanning the Willamette River in Portland, rural historic covered bridges, the Willamette Falls Locks, the Historic Columbia River Highway, Red's Horse Ranch, and Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland.
