Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Isidore Starr is a teacher and lawyer who is widely recognized as the "father of law-related education" (LRE). His degrees include: B.A. (City College of New York), L.L.B. (St. John's University, 1936), M.A. (American history, Columbia University, 1939), J.S.D. (Brooklyn Law School of St. Lawrence University), and a Ph.D. (political science and economics, New School for Social Research).

Isidore Starr was born on November 24, 1911 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia. Starr taught social studies in the New York City Public Schools from 1934 to 1961. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army, first as an instructor at Camp Plauche (New Orleans) and then as an information-education officer in the Philippine Islands. Starr became a professor of education at Queens College, New York in 1962 and taught there until his retirement in 1975. Starr served as a consultant and instructor in law studies for the Law in American Society Foundation in Chicago, Law in a Changing Society in Texas, Law-Focused Education at the University of Oklahoma, Law-Related Education Project at the University of Cincinnati, and law studies institutes in New York State. After retirement he moved to Arizona, where he served as a consultant to the Arizona Bar Foundation Center for Law-Related Education and to the National Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. The Isidore Starr Award for Excellence in Law-Related Education was established in 1983 by the American Bar Association to recognize outstanding achievement in the field of law-related education (LRE). The award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions in promoting excellence in law-related education in elementary or secondary schools.
