Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dutch artist Hendrik Pieter (Henk) Pander was born in Haarlem, Netherlands in 1937. The first of ten children born to Jacob (Jaap) Pander and Hendrica Smedes Pander, he began painting at the age of 9. He learned from his father, also a painter and illustrator, while drawing and painting as a youth on the Haarlem dunes.

Pander studied art at Amsterdam's Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten between 1956 and 1961. He won the Silver Medallion of the Prix de Rome in 1961 and the Therese van Duyl-Schwarze Portrait Award in 1964. While in Amsterdam, he was commissioned to create works for the Dutch Government, the Dutch National Railways, and the City of Amsterdam. In 1965, Pander immigrated to Portland, Oregon, where he still resides.

While in Portland, Pander's commissions include portraits of Governor Tom McCall and Governor John Kitzhaber; documentary paintings for Project Galileo for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and murals for the Port of Portland, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Oregon State University Memorial Union, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Pander's awards include the first Oregon Arts Commission Master Fellowship in Painting in 1991, the State of Oregon Governor's Award for the Arts in 2005 and the Regional Arts and Cultural Council Visual Artist Fellowship. His exhibitions have been in Museums and Galleries across the United States and the Netherlands including the Portland Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the New England School of Art and Design, the Vakbondsmuseum, and the Museum Henriette Polk.

In addition to his painting, Pander was co-founder of the Storefront Theatre in 1970, founded the City of Portland's Visual Chronicle, and served on the Portland Metropolitan Arts Commission and Public Art Advisory Committee. He also designed sets for the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the Portland Dance Theater, the Oregon Ballet Theater and the Storefront Theatre.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Henk Pander papers document Pander's success as an artist through correspondence, business papers, notes, and artwork. Materials contain research and proposals for many of Pander's commissioned works including the Governor Tom McCall and Governor John Kitzhaber portraits, and the Port of Portland Mural. Correspondence and speeches document Pander's interest in beginning the Visual Chronicle and its relationship to the Topographic Atlas of Amsterdam. Materials show Pander's work co-founding the Storefront Theatre as well as planning for the various set designs he created.

This collection contains personal papers related to Pander's family and friends. These include correspondence between Pander and his family in the Netherlands, as well as between family and friends throughout the United States.

Also included is an extensive collection of sketchbooks and journals which document Pander's life and career during the years 1947 to 2015. Drawings within the sketchbooks focus on important events throughout Pander's life including: living in Amsterdam and Haarlem, Holland; ride-alongs with emergency first responders; World War II studies; the Galileo Project with NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration); the demolition of the New Carissa tanker; and set designs and posters for various theaters. Many of the sketchbook drawings are portraits and landscapes, which provide insight into Pander's daily life with his family, friends, and colleagues. Pander's ability to capture intimate relationships among people is also evident in depictions of erotica and erotic imagery found throughout his sketchbooks.

Series I:  Archives, 1970-2008Return to Top

Items in this series document both Pander's personal and professional life. Overviews of Pander's life can be found in the resume files as well as the 1978 interview transcription for the Oregon Historical Society. Many files include research materials, proposals, notes and drawings for Pander's projects. Projects range from murals, to portraits, to theater set designs. Files on murals and paintings include Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, the 911 Communications office and the Port of Portland. Business correspondence throughout the files relate to Pander's projects, articles, and the sale of his artwork. Business correspondence also includes Henk's attempt to break into the New York gallery market.

Pander's involvement with the theater, specifically the Storefront and Oregon Ballet Theatre, is documented along with materials relating to the founding of Portland's Visual Chronicle.

Photographs and research materials from Pander's trip to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Kennedy Space Center for his painting of the Galileo Project are included. Throughout the files are personal correspondence from family and friends, written in both English and Dutch.
