Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Albert Youngman (1903-1991) was born in Poland. He attended the Warsaw Academy of Drama from 1916 to 1918 and participated in theatrical productions in Polish. It was after seeing a production of Dybbyk at a Jewish theater in Europe however, that he became interested in Yiddish productions. In early 1921, he moved to Seattle, learned English, and finished high school. He moved soon after to Los Angeles where he did some directing for a short time. He eventually moved back to Seattle and met his wife there in the late 1920s. In Seattle he directed a for-profit drama club called the Seattle Habima Players which operated between 1931 and 1941 and performed plays in Yiddish. He also was an active member and officer of the B'nai B'rith.
