Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Hamza El Din (1929-2006) was a composer, musician, teacher, and vocalist from Toshka, Egypt. During his youth, he worked as an engineer for the Egyptian National Railway before deciding to study music. He began his studies at Cairo University and continued them at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome). The instruments he focused on were the oud--a lute-type string instrument--and the tar--a single-headed frame drum. His performances in Egypt attracted attention in the United States, and in the 1960s, he emigrated there to continue his career. During his lifetime, he held a variety of teaching positions in the field of ethnomusicology at institutions including Ohio University and the University of Washington.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

Original archive sheet describes this collection as a concert recording, probably due to insertion of concert announcement in one tape box; however, all 3 reels are clearly studio sessions (all from same session?)

Check identity of contents (some confusion in documentation)

OT analog reels digitized 10/2016 (48 kHz, 24-bit) - 70-12.1.wav (20:27), 70-12.2.wav (14:25), 70-12.3.wav (13:46).

Speed fluctuation noted at 00:27 on 70-21.2.

On 70-12.2 at 08:18 new recording begins at 7 1/2 ips. All material before this point is recorded at 15 ips.

Documentation: Notes from tape boxes.
