- Henry M. Hanzen (1879-1967) was a newspaper reporter, attorney, and Oregon political manager. The collection (1917-1960) contains a manuscript chronicling the political history of Oregon from 1900-1960, titled "Power," campaign files of Oregon politicians, Oregon State Budget Director correspondence, Press Publishing Co., and Willamette Publishing Co. files, personal correspondence, legal files and scrapbooks.

Henry M. Hanzen (1879-1967) was born in Genesee, Idaho, and educated at the University of Idaho. He was a newspaper reporter in Idaho and Oregon, and had a financial and editorial interest in several Oregon newspapers.
In 1930, he managed the election campaign for Julius Meier (an independent candidate for Governor of Oregon), and was appointed budget director under Governor Meier. He was also campaign manager for Rufus Holman in the 1944 senatorial primary campaign.

The collection contains a manuscript chronicling the political history of Oregon from 1900-1960, titled "Power," political campaign files of (Oregon Governor) Julius Meier and other Oregon politicians, correspondence files of the Oregon State Budget Director, business and legal records concerning Press Publishing Co., and Willamette Publishing Co., personal correspondence, subject files, legal files and scrapbooks.
The 447-page manuscript of "Power," includes original and revised versions.
Campaign correspondence and documents include the George Joseph campaign (1930), Julius Meier campaign (1930), Rufus Holman campaign (1943-1944), and William Langley campaign (1954).
Hanzen served as Oregon state budget director from 1931-1934 and his correspondence files are included (about 300 letters).
Personal correspondence files include a general file, Charles L. McNary (1917-1944) and Wayne L. Morse (1946-1959) correspondence.
Subject files include business records and legal documents concerning the Press Publishing Co., of Salem, Oregon, and the Willamette Publishing Co., of Portland, Oregon, files on Bonneville Administration (1941-1946), Citizens Against Commercialized Gambling (1952), Weem case documents that relate to the "Joseph-Rand controversy," and political literature that includes cards, pamphlets and broadsides.
Legal files include Rand vs. Oregonian, and the Ruth Barnett case.
There are also five volumes of scrapbooks containing clippings.
