Gerda Buchheim Haas was born in 1914 in Berlin, Germany. After the Nazis gained power, she and her family escaped to Czechoslovakia, then France, before arriving in Shanghai in 1939. They lived in the Hongkou District until 1947 when they immigrated to the United States, finally settling in Tacoma.

In the memoir, Gerda Buchheim Haas recounts her childhood in Berlin, Germany, under the rise of Nazism, her family's escape to Shanghai, their life in the Hongkou district where they lived from 1939-1947, and their eventual immigration to Tacoma, Washington.
