Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

In October of 1961, Andrew Gronholdt and an agent from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game visited Unga Island, Alaska to view the petrified tree forest located on the beach. They landed on one end and walked the length of the five mile beach where they were then picked up by the returning airplane.

Andrew Gronholdt's work brought the area to the attention of the state of Alaska. In 1970, Gilbert Eakins published a report for the Division of Mines and Geology Department of Natural Resources titled, "A Petrified Forest on Unga Island, Alaska", recommending that Unga Island be set aside by the state of Alaska as a State Park or Wilderness Area. He cited several occasions when looters tried to remove large quantities of the petrified fossils with the intent to sell the wood to tourists.
