Historical NoteReturn to Top

Located in Harney County, Oregon, the community of Crane was named after nearby Crane Creek. The first post office was established in 1895 but discontinued in 1903, to be re-established in 1916. At that time, a railroad was completed linking Crane to Ontario, and Crane became an important livestock shipping point. The Crane townsite was located on the land grant of the Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Wagon Road.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection contains records on individual sections within the Crane townsite. Each record provides a colored map with details of topography. One portion of the records, circa 1911, consists of loose-leaf sheets that had been contained in a small binder. The remainder of the records are in a bound land examination book; these date to circa 1911-1916, and typically include comments about each section, such as notes on landscape features, soil quality, availability of water, and uses for which the land is suitable. Also included in the collection is a ledger book, mostly blank, that lists purchasers of lots and accounts.
