The Physical Education, Health Education and Leisure Services Department of Central Washington University was first established in 1969 with the consolidation of the Physical Education Department, Health Education Department and the Recreation Program. It was named the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation. In 1974, the Recreation Program was reorganized and renamed Leisure Services, and thus the change to Physical Education, Health and Leisure Services Department. The department’s final title change was in 1994 to Physical Education, Health Education and Leisure Services Department.

The scrapbooks in this collection contain photographs, newspaper clippings and ephemera associated with the Physical Education Majors and Minors Club at Central Washington State College (1960-1967), the Crimson Corals Swimmers Club (1968-1971), and the Varsity Field Hockey Teams (1968-1979). The slides in the collection include images of recreation, class field trips, and summer camps from 1964 to 1984. They feature past students of Central Washington University. In addition, the collection includes photographs and correspondence related to Helen McCabe.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
