Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Robert A. Brightman is an American anthropologist and a retired professor of Native American Studies in the Department of Anthropology at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Brightman is known for his work among the Cree Indians in Manitoba, Canada. He received his undergraduate education at Reed College, graduating in 1973. He earned his MA (1976) and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1983. His 1993 book “Grateful Prey” is an examination of human-animal relationships, hunting cosmology, and spirituality among the Rock Cree.

Research notes, 1978. Photocopies of handwritten and typed field notes that document his research, employing interviews, on Cree linguistics, ethnozoology and ethnobotany. Field notes relating to Cree (th-dialect) terms for mammals, fish, insects, reptiles, amphibians; notes on taxonomic orderings; notes on “Cree ethnozoology”: hunting and trapping methods, utilization, observations, and beliefs concerning animal attributes and behavior; miscellaneous notes on productive activity relating to animals; seasonal cycle, and cooking methods; and notes on religious aspects of production: animals as spirit agencies, animal ceremonialism, dietary rules.
