The Social Development Research Group (SDRG) is an interdisciplinary team of researchers affiliated with the University of Washington's School of Social Work. SDRG was originally founded in 1979, when J. David Hawkins and Richard F. Catalano began to develop the Social Development Strategy, which continues to provide the theoretical basis for risk- and protective-focused prevention that underlies much of the group's research. The current group of more than 75 researchers and staff members continue to work together to understand and promote healthy behaviors and positive social development among children, adolescents, and young adults. With roughly $10 million dollars in annual funding, SDRG directs work on twelve research projects that address drug abuse, delinquency, risky sexual behavior, violence, and school dropout in young people.

Project files document the SDRG's involvement in the Six State Consortium for Prevention Needs Assessment between 1993 and 1997. The SDRG collaborated with the state offices of alcohol and drug abuse services of Kansas, Maine, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah and Washington to develop a reliable and valid set of indicators of risk and protective factors for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse. The project also created a system for periodically monitoring and reporting these indicators using an efficient combination of archival and survey data sources at state, county, and community levels. By establishing risk profiles of specific geographic areas and population subgroups, prevention planners can use this information to implement more effective prevention programs to fit each community's unique profile of risk and protection and to evaluate the programs they fund.
Project files include correspondence, minutes, agendas, reports, survey forms, questionnaires, workplans, drafts, proposals, presentation handouts and transparencies, conference files, travel requests, handbooks, newsletters, brochures, publications, and other related materials.
