Biographical NoteReturn to Top

J. L. Elam, born in 1862, garnered much wealth from an inheritance and a series of wise investments in industrial agricultural equipment and companies. In 1903, he used this wealth to open the J.L. Elam Bank in Walla Walla, Washington, which he renamed the People's State Bank in 1911. Eventually he opened more banks in the Milton-Freewater, Washington, area. The People's State Bank closed on September 12, 1932, as a direct result of the Great Depression. The People's State Bank was the first bank in Walla Walla to succumb to the Great Depression. J.L. Elam died on February 15, 1942, at the age of 80.
