Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Ştefan Octavian Iosif (September 11, 1875– June 22, 1913) was a Romanian poet and translator. He was born in Braşov, Transylvania (part of Austria-Hungary at the time). He studied in his native town and in Sibiu before completing his education in Paris. He met Dimitrie Anghel who became a close friend. Anghel, Iosif, and Emil Garleanu created the Romanian Writer's Society in 1909. His friendshiip with Anghel came to an end when they fell in love with the same woman, Natalia Negru. She married Iosif but divorced him to marry Anghel. Iosif died in 1913 at age 37 after having a stroke.
