Archives West Finding Aid

The collection contains diary entries relating the experiences of traveling Oregonians during the 1870's. Entries were written by men and women interested in collecting Native American cultural artifacts and studying the flora and fauna of western and southern Oregon. The authors were likely involved in the Reverend Summers group who visited the Siletz Reservation at Salmon River, Siletz Bay, and Nestucca Bay searching for antique Native American articles and recent works that retained ancient forms. The diary entries include descriptions of food preparation, basket making, and stories collected from tribal members and settlers.
