Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Steven Feld (1949-) is an anthropologist, ethnomusicologist, linguist, musician, and teacher from Philadelphia, United States. He earned his BA in anthropology from Hofstra University in 1971 and his PhD in anthropology/linguistics/ethnomusicology from Indiana University in 1979. He is known for his extensive field work in Papua New Guinea and for coining the term schizophonic mimesis. During his career, he taught at Columbia University, New York University, University of California Santa Cruz, University of Texas, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of New Mexico.
