Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Barbara Reeder Lundquist was born in Hays, Kansas on Jan 3, 1934, is an american music educator. She attended the University of Wisconsin (BMus 1955), Montana State University (MS 1959), and University of Washington (DMA 1973). She taught music in the Seattle public schools (1959–71, 1977–80; supervisor 1965–71) and at the University of Washington (1971–77, 1980–91). She guest taught at several other institutions and was an educational consultant for the Smithsonian Global Sound Project (2002), U.S. Information Service in Malawi and Mozambique (1997), Yamaha Corporation (1989–91), Manhattanville Music Curriculum Project (1968), and Contemporary Music Project, among others. She held positions in the College Music Society (executive board 1976–80, 1988–91; national president 1992–94); National Association for Music Education (MENC) (executive committees for the Society for Music Teacher Education 1984–88 and Society for General Music 1986–88); Society for Ethnomusicology (music education standing committee 1980–92); and International Society for Music Education (world music advisory panel 1992–94). She served on journal editorial committees and authored articles on world music and arts education. She was inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame (1988) and won the MENC National Black Music Caucus Outstanding Achievement Award (1981) and the Kennedy Center Arts in Education Award (1992).

This collection primarily contains recordings of Barbara Lundquist Oral History. The oral history was recorded June 20 - July 21, 2017 by Deborah Pierce, for a total of 10 hours. This collection includes a interview of Barbara Lundquist on the TV program "What's New in the Schoolhouse", a recodring of a ensemble directed by her, and a recording of her Cello Recital at the University of Wisconsin.
