Accession No. 3879-001: Morris Polack oral history interview, 1987-1989Return to Top

3 sound cassettes; 1 transcript: 59 pages

Scope and Content: Tape-recorded interviews, covering the years 1905-1989, on 8/28/87 and 1/9/89, with transcript, conducted by Eric Offenbacher.

This interview comprises Mr. Polack's life and career from birth in 1905 in Bogushovka (Ukraine) through pre-revolutionary Russia including his: escape across the Dienester river in Bessarabia; stowaway aboard a ship to Halifax (Nova Scotia); box car travel across Canada to Vancouver, B.C. where he stayed for two years working as a newspaper salesman and a sweater factory worker (greatly helped by a local dentist, Dr. William Thompson); entry into the U.S. in 1926 assisted by HIAS; and his early activity here, by means of an acquired truck, as huckster, junk peddler and chicken transporter. He bought in Seattle Poultry in 1928 and took it over in 1930 and then changed the name to Acme Poultry (reason explained) on Jackson Street where it exists until today. Interview continues with his synagogue affiliations, marriage to Edith Dolgoff, his introduction to soliciting funds by Mr. Robinchik and the latter's influence upon his own start of giving. His lifelong aim has always been "to show the way." And he concludes: "God blessed me with the gift of giving."
