Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Battle of Hungry Hill lasted from October 25-November 1, 1855. The battle began with an accidental discovery of Tyee John's encampment by Lieutenant August V. Kautz and a small group of soldiers. Following the death of two soldiers and a gunshot wound suffered by Kautz, the group retreated to gather additional forces. On the morning of October 30, the encampment was alerted by campfires set by American soldiers. The battle lasted for two days with the Rogue Valley warriors defending the hilltop. American forces retreated on the evening of October 31, but were met with a surprise attack by Tyee John's men on the morning of November 1. By the afternoon, remaining soldiers had retreated to settlements along the Oregon-California Trail.
