Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Sabri Khan was born on May 21, 1927 into a family of distinguished musicians in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. He belonged the Sainia "gharana", which traced its musical traditions back to Mian Tansen, the great musician in the court of Mughal emperor Akbar.Khan was initiated into playing the sarangi by his grandfather Ustad Haji Mohammed Khan and later learnt from his father, Ustad Chajju Khan, both acclaimed sarangi players of their time. He also spent some time learning from his uncle Ustad Laddan Khan of Rampur.

Over the years, Khan emerged as an accomplished musician and performed all over the world, introducing the sarangi to foreign audiences. He performed a duet with renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin and served as a visiting professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. He was the recipient of many awards, including the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan.
