Biographical NoteReturn to Top

James Crider was a University of Washington professor of drama from 1952 to 1990.

James Roberts Crider was born July 4, 1920 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was abandoned as an infant, adopted in January 1921, and lived for 93 years before dying on July 15, 2013. He received a B.A. in 1945 from Cornell College. Crider served in the US Army during WWII and the occupation of Japan (1942-1948), learning the Japanese language from his wife-to-be (1945) teacher Lilyan Inana, a Seattle native and refugee from Minidoka internment camp in Idaho. Crider then earned an MA from the University of Washington in 1950. Also in 1950 he was recalled to active Army duty for two years in Korea, where he was awarded a bronze star. Then, in 1952, he began a career at the University of Washington that would last until 1990, teaching and designing costumes for hundreds of productions in the School of Drama. In retirement, Crider continued making quilts, fabric wall hangings, women's jackets and other textile works.
