Henry Minor Esterly (1873-1944) was born in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, and educated at the University of Wisconsin. He came to Oregon in 1904 and practiced law. He was noted for his defense of persons charged under laws involving civil liberties.

He served as an Oregon member of the Democratic National Committee in 1914, and he was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union.

The collection contains two case files regarding free speech in Portland for Lincoln Steffens and George F. Vanderveer. There is also a file of speeches by Esterly.

The correspondence file contains letters exchanged between family members, from 1903 to 1934.

There is also a file of legal papers, and a docket book from 1813 to 1839, of Matthew Minor, Jr. (1780-1839).
