The Daily is the independent student newspaper for the University of Washington. A nine-member Board of Student Publications oversees The Daily and appoints the Publisher. The newspaper began as the Pacific Wave in 1891, officially changing its name to The Daily in 1909. In 2006, at the College Media Adviser Spring Convention in New York City, The Daily won the Apple Award for the best overall four-year college tabloid-sized newspaper in the nation.

The bulk of the photographs in this collection cover University of Washington sports events and atheletes. Sports include football, basketball, swimming, baseball, volleyball, gymnastics, rugby, tennis, soccer, golf, hockey, skiing and more.
Other subjects include portraits of UW personalities, local celebrities, political figures and guest speakers; school events; and UW buildings.
Student photographers represented include Barry Broman, Harlan Chinn, Bill Douthitt, Grant Haller, Sung Lingun, Jim Loomis, Bryan Monroe, Jeff Pruss, Susan Schuman, Hideki Tomeoka, Dave Walker, and many others.
