Historical NoteReturn to Top
Herbert B. Maw was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1893. He earned a law degree from the University of Utah in 1916, and a bachelor's degree in 1923. He went on to get his master's degree, and in 1927, received a doctorate in law from Northwestern University. Shortly after Maw and his colleagues began their law practice, war was declared and he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served as L.D.S. Chaplain in France until 1919. In 1923, he joined the University of Utah faculty as a speech teacher and became a full professor in 1931. He was in the Utah Senate from 1928 to 1938, and won the Democratic nomination and the governorship in 1940. Herbert B. Maw was Utah's eighth governor, holding office for two terms, from 1941 to 1949. His ideas for Utah's economy as well as his ideas for living an active life led him to success.
