The Maclay family came to Montana in 1863 and operated a general store in Virginia City, Montana. John Maclay and a partner, J. T. Murphy, opened a general store at Fort Benton, Montana. The firm became known as Murphy-Maclay and Company and operated until the death of John Maclay on January 3, 1896.
