Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Arthur Churchill Warner was born in Grandy, Massachusetts in 1864. He studied photography in Minnesota and got as job in 1886 as a staff photographer for the Northern Pacific Railway. He moved to Seattle in the 1880s and worked as a photographer, producing images for the tourist trade. Warner worked as a photographer for John Muir during an 1888 Mount Rainier climbing expedition. In 1890, he married Edith Randolph, the daughter of Captain Simon Peter Randolph. Afterward, Arthur entered into a partnership with his father-in-law (Warner & Randolph), obtaining the capital which allowed him to photograph in Alaska during the summers of 1898, 1899 and 1900. Following this, Arthur returned to Seattle to work for Lowman and Hanford as a photographer, as well as a number of odd jobs. He produced a number of projection slides for theaters, as well as illustrated lectures on the wild flowers of western Washington. Arthur Churchill Warner was an active photographer until his death in 1943.
