Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Eva Louise Alvey Richards was also known as Eva L. Alvey and Eva L. Andrews, (all her married names). As Eva L. Andrews, she was appointed to the Alaska School Service by the U.S. Bureau of Education as a teacher and nurse. She traveled to Nome on the Bureau of Education ship, "Boxer," in 1923 and remained in Nome, working in the hospital until she could travel overland to Wainwright in 1924. She taught and rendered medical service to the Alaska natives there until 1925. After leaving Alaska, Richards corresponded with missionaries and Eskimos in Wainwright and Point Barrow. She wrote about her experiences in Alaska, principally in "Arctic Mood," a book she published in 1949. Richards was a member of the Alaska Committee of the Home Missionary Society.
