The Richards Studio was the foremost commercial photographic studio in Tacoma, Washington for over 35 years. The studio's photographers documented the Tacoma community's weddings, funerals, parades, business growth, and school activities over three decades. Richards Studio was the official studio for the Douglas Fir Plywood Association, the Cheney Lumber Company, and the Tacoma Athletic Commission. Many of the studio's photos appeared daily in the Tacoma Times newspaper.

Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

Founded in 1899, St. Regis was a large international paper company. St. Regis produced 360,000 tons of kraft paper per year. Paper production began in Tacoma on January 5, 1949. St. Regis initially purchased a pulp mill in Tacoma in 1939 and spent years updating the mill into a kraft paper facility. Before 1949, St. Regis only manufactured pulp and multiwall bags at the Tacoma plant. By 1985, the mill had become the Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company, when it was puchased by the Simpson Paper Company of San Francisco.
