Frank Holwerda (1908-1971) was born in Manhattan, Montana. He had a varied career working on Wall Street until 1930. He went "out to sea" in 1932, working for Standard Oil in Dutch Guiana, British Guiana, Panama, and Santo Domingo, until 1940. He served in the army (it is unknown for what country) until 1943, and later worked in importing in Central America, horse racing in Kentucky, and gold mining in Alaska.

Holwerda began writing for publication in 1953, and that year was published in Northwest Romances, and Accent (a Univeristy of Illinois publication).

Holwerda was represented by the Lenniger Literary Agency.

The collection contains manuscripts of forty-two short stories, and material includes drafts, revisions, and notes.

Outgoing correspondence is organized by date, from 1952 to 1967. Outgoing correspondence includes letters to publishers and agents, and letters of grievance.

There are also five folders of individual correspondents, including publishers and agents, and one file regarding the upkeep of his 1961 Pontiac Tempest. Publishers and agents include Harry Widmer of Lenniger Literary Agency, agent Jacques Chambrun, Inc, University of Illinois Press, and Houghton Mifflin Co.
