Historical BackgroundReturn to Top

The Grand Coulee Dam is on the Columbia River in Washington. It was built between 1933-1942 to produce hydroelectric power and provide irrigation. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and a consortium of three companies called MWAK (Mason-Walsh-Atkinson Kier Company) began construction in 1933. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt visited the dam construction in August 1934. The lake behind the dam was named the Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake in his honor as the one who authorized the dam to be built. The first water went over the spillway in 1942. It is the largest electric power-producing facility in the United States.
