Gustav Samter was born in Hamburg, Germany on November 15, 1924. During the rise of the Nazi regime, he fled Germany with his parents in 1940 for Shanghai. In 1947, he emigrated to Seattle.

Scope and Content: Tape recorded interview conducted by Henrietta Reifler in 1987.

Reminiscence by Gustav and Ruth Samter, who were displaced persons in Shanghai during WWII. The interviewer was gathering information for a writing project on Seattle Jews from China.

Samter discusses the Jewish communities in Hamburg and Shanghai during World War II as well as his emigration to Seattle after the war. Names discussed include: Ruth Wolfe, Rabbi Samuel Graudenz, Rabbi Baruch Shapiro, Machzikay-Hadath synagogue.
